Once in DOS, type the DOS command EXIT to return to the Installation program. __________________________________________________ HELP: EXIT Help Topic Index Exits the INSTALL.EXE program and returns you to DOS, or where-ever you were when you started the program up. __________________________________________________ Option: INSTALL What it will do. See Also: Using INSTALL.EXE First of all, the same INSTALL.EXE program will work for ALL the new ProDoor/ProLON files including the OVERLAY version of ProDOOR. The INSTALL program will automatically detect what is available for installation, and then adjust its menus accordingly. If you go through the installation and decide you'd rather go back to the old way, see UNDO. You don't have to use the INSTALL program for the new software, but it does do a LOT of the grunt-work required to install the programs. If you'd rather do it the hard way, and go through the normal sysop pains, see MANUAL INSTALLATION If you let INSTALL do it for you, it will: ------------------------------------------ 1. Optionally creates backups of your existing ProDoor/Prolon related files including any existing overlay files if found. All backups are left in the SAME directory as they were found so you can easily "un-do" the upgrade. The last character of the file ext. will be changed to a _. ie. PRODOOR.EX_ PROLON.EX_, PRODOOR.OV_, etc. 2. Copies the new .EXE (and OVR) files to your existing ProDoor/Prologon directories. When the installation program is completed, you can immediately run the new versions. If you decide you do NOT want some of the new features, you can DISABLE them using SETS and, adding and resetting the CNF variables in PROLON.CNF. See the SETS and CNF help items for more info on DISABLING new features. __________________________________________________ Option: Manual Install Help Topic Index It's a LOT easier if you let INSTALL.EXE do the grunt work for you (making all the backups, copying the new files, etc), but if you wanna do it the "ole sysop way" then these are the steps you must take. ProDOOR Version 3.51 <-- Make ALL your backups FIRST! -------------------. 1. Unzip and copy the new PRODOOR.EXE (and OVR if using the OVERLAY version) to your existing ProDOOR directory. If you are upgrading from the Pre-Release 3.50, you can remove ALL but one of those "SETS" required by the pre-release version. Read on. 2. If you have MULTI-NODE, and want to monitor SYSTEM usage for ALL nodes, you need to have one SET in where-ever file you now have your other "SETS" in. SET USAGE_FILE=C:\PCB\PROSTATS.DAT You can "set" it to any file, any path, you want but it MUST be the same for ALL nodes if you expect it to keep track of ALL activity. If you want to DISABLE any new feature, or do not want to use the DEFAULTS, you will have to use more "SETS". See the info on SETS. ProLON Version 1.31 <-- Make ALL your backups FIRST! ------------------- 1. Unzip and copy the new PROLON.EXE file to the same place your existing one is. If you are upgrading from the Pre-Release 1.30, you can leave all your existing CNF variables as is. Thats really all there is to it. Once you have done all of the above, you are ready to run. Just fire up your BBS like you always do. __________________________________________________ Option: PRICING Help Topic Index This FIRST release of the NEW ProDoor/Prolon programs is FREE, zip, nada, nothing. Call it a form of introducing ourselves, an indication of our coding style, an indication of what is still "yet to come", and our general programming emphasis. (Lots of SYSOP stuff huh?? Got the idea??) If you feel you'd like to pay something anyway, then call my BBS at (713) 852-4541 and donate a one-years subscription. Until 03/15/93, the rate for registered ProDoor/Prolon sysops is a flat $20 per year. Obviously not a lot for the amount of work this takes, but it's not the amount, it's the thought that counts. See FORBES for a complete phone list and mailing address. __________________________________________________ PRO Plus - The Beginning Copyright (c) 1992-1993 Forbes Development Company 7112 FM 1960 East Humble, Texas 77346 Voice: (713) 852-7486, M-F, 10-6, CST FAX: (713) 852-7489, 24 hrs. a day BBS: 852-4541, 2400 baud, FREE Access 852-4543, 38.4, Subcribers ONLY __________________________________________________ Option: Whats NEW Help Topic Index Related Topics: --------------- New CNF (PROLON.CNF) Variables New SET environment variables used by ProDoor New @$ Variables used by both ProDoor/ProLon There are a LOT of changes, the major ones follow, the rest are listed in the WHATS.NEW file. New ProDOOR command: <-- New since 3.50 -------------------- Ever wanted to get on a node and not let everyone know you were on ?? Type SILENT once in ProDoor and bingo, you ain't there !! Type NODE to confirm it. NOTE: This is security-level sensitive... only those with security level = 100 or higher can use it. However, as a sysop, you can type it on the command line for ANY caller, regardless of their security level. New ProDoor/ProLogon F Keys. <-- New since 3.5/1.3 --------------------------- I really missed the F1 for Temp-Sysop privledges. Missed the Right/Left arrows for temporarily changing a caller's security level. I don't miss them now !! Yep, they be here!! You can use these keys from ProLon or ProDoor. Nice in ProLogon to qwikly force a caller into another door. NOTE: Unless you hit the F1 for Temp-Sysop, the caller's security will return to normal if they exit to a door, and then return to ProDoor. (Security reasons...) Call-Waiting Screen: -------------------- The very first thing you will see in PROLON is the new call-waiting screen - assuming of course that you "activated" this new feature in your PROLON.CNF file. KEYS: PgDn - toggles between NODE and SYSTEM Usage. Z - will RESET usage stats to ZERO. I have heard one sysop say that the VERY first time he ran the new PROLON.EXE, the "usage-stats" were all outta whack. No problem. Just hit the Z key and everything will be fine from then on. Expanded DISP- and EXEC- functions ---------------------------------- I like using these in PROXMAIN but, would never know from my caller log if they had been used or run by a caller. I had to use an external program to update the caller log before and after the command was used. Not anymore. $LOGEXEC- and $LOGDISP- will act just like the normal commands, but add the entry to your caller log too. $EXEC- and $DISP- are still there but if you want to see usage of those commands, add the word LOG to the front of them. Sysop Macros Keys <-- Before, just F8, now ADD 10 ! ----------------- The Sysop Macro keys (10 of them) found in PcbSetup (Options 2) have been expanded. You can now put $DISP- and yep, $EXEC- in the macros. Great for "hot-keying" a caller into a door, or DISP-ing an ASCII screen at them. Example: <-- See OPTIONS 2 in your PcbSetUp ! -------- Shift F1 $DISP-D:\PCB\VIOLATE to dump a file to the screen. Shift F2 $EXEC-D:\PCB\DOORS\VERIFY.BAT to throw them in to a call-back verify door. NOTE: Your $DISP- file can even contain the new @LOGOFF@ variable and when that file is "DISP-ed"... yep, it'll dump the user. Shift F8 $DISP-D:\PCB\BuzzOFF with a @LOGOFF@ as the last thing in the "BuzzOFF" file. He'll see the file, and then get dumped. Strict Command Interpetation <-- If activated ---------------------------- I use to hate it when I was "chatting" on the command line and typed something like... GREAT, LETS TALK !! only to have the caller logged off... the "G" would do him in. Not anymore... if you set STRICT commands on, the GREAT example won't dump them off the BBS. And even more... you can set the "bad command" to display a message to the caller, you can have it ignored and just return to the command prompt.... and you can even have the "bad command" logged to your caller log. All of these are SET-ABLE by you. See the SET commands for more info here. Force Message Scan ------------------ You can now force it, in a number of ways. See the new CNF variables for more info. Allow Duplicate Uploads ----------------------- Must be a zillion times I (as the sysop) wanted to upload a file, and replace the one on the BBS with a new version, but couldn't because there was already one there with the same name. Now you can over-ride it if you want (and you have high enough security). Increased Security for DISP- Usage <-- New ---------------------------------- In ProDoor 3.5, I temporarily removed the DISP function when displaying DIRx or UPLOAD files. Could be very "dangerous" if it was in the wrong place (like a file DESCRIPTION). Now it's back but with reliable security. - When viewing ANY dirx listing, if a DISP is found past column 30, it will be ignored and an entry will be recorded to the caller log. - There is a new SET that you can use to have even MORE protection. SET MAX_DISP_LOC=30 When using this SET, any DISP that occurs past column 30 of the screen, will be ignored, and an entry recorded in the caller log. Bug Fixes --------- Ansi messages getting reset to default colors on every line.... fixed. DIR listings getting reset to defaults if the listing had embedded color codes in it.... fixed. Range check error if using Z or L to locate a file, and if WILDCARDS are used, and... if filename was longer than 8 characters.... fixed. Range check error on ANSI upload into a message if number of characters on a line exceeded the max of 72 characters.... fixed Remote callers INSERT key not active in Visual edit of a message.... fixed. Problem with $DISP- when in upload/download file description... fixed. Hard disk activity on a blank call-waiting screen every 30 seconds.... fixed. A blanked Call-Waiting screen coming back on during a modem reset.... fixed. .... and a LOT more (see WHATS.NEW), and even LOTS more still on the way !! __________________________________________________ Option: New CNF Vars Help Topic Index These new varaiables should be in your PROLON.CNF file. If you like my DEFAULTS, you don't need to add them. However, if you DON'T like my defaults, you need to need to add them yourself, and then change each one according to your preferences. This list is duplicated in the file called NEWCNFS SHOW_PLUS OFF (ON, OFF, Default=OFF) ; Some like the "+" on the blank call-waiting ; screen, and some do not. NEW_PANEL ON (ON, OFF, Default=ON) ; Whether or not to use the NEW call-waiting ; screen that shows BBS usage. New Callers, ; Messages, Uploads, downloads, etc. ; PgDn on the Call-Waiting screen will toggle ; between NODE and SYSTEM-WIDE stats. ; To get SYSTEM-WIDE usage stats, all nodes ; must have the same SET USAGE_FILE= file. ; See the SETS for more information. FORCE_MSG_SCAN ALL (OFF, ALL, MAIN, Default=MAIN) ; Forces a SCAN MAIN BOARD ONLY or a ; SCAN ALL conferences for messages. ; If set to MAIN, the caller will be asked ; if they want to SCAN ALL in addition to ; the SCAN MAIN. ; If set to OFF, the caller will get the normal ; "Scan Main Board for Messages" prompt. ; If set to ALL or MAIN, the caller will NOT ; get the prompt... it will be FORCED ! FORCE_SCAN_COMMAND N (N, Y, S, Default=N) ; The "J ?" command to use when FORCE is on. ; ie. N = J N Y = J Y S = J S ; N=NEW Y=YOUR S=STATS ; Has the same effect as if the user typed it ; on the command line. ; Each of these commands will produce different ; results, you should experiment to see which ; one you prefer the best. ; I use the "N" for ALL NEW messages and it seems ; to do the trick... no more "I LEFT A MESSAGE", ; "WHY DIDN'T YOU ANSWER ?" Heck, I DID !!! ; ... or, he left the message in Conference 3, ; and didn't see the response because he never ; went back in, and expects it to be in the Main. ; He'll see it now.... it is FORCED !! __________________________________________________ Option: New SETS Help Topic Index If you are upgrading from the Pre-Release versions, and you want to use MY defaults, then you can remove ALL but of those "required" sets EXCEPT for one. Read On. Look at each of the DEFAULTS. If you don't like mine, then you can disable them using the DOS SET command. Put the SET commands where-ever your existing ones are now (AUTOEXEC.BAT, BOARDx.BAT, etc); NOTE: Again, with the exception of this FIRST set, you do NOT need to have ANY of them unless you don't like my defaults. Like the defaults... forget it. Don't like the defaults, use the SET to change it. set usage_file=prostats.dat (REQUIRED!!) ; The one SET that is REQUIRED if you have multi ; node, and want to trach usage for ALL nodes. ; Name and location of BBS/NODE usage data file ; Make it the SAME for ALL nodes if you want to ; track SYSTEM usage. set max_disp_loc_desc=30 (any number, Default=30) ; << NEW since the Pre-Release >> ; For improved security with the DISP command, ; set this and if a DISP is detected past column ; "x", it is ignored and an entry recorded to the ; caller log. Set it to 255 to allow ALL DISP-s. ; NOTE: This number is ignored when listing ; file directories... if ANY disp- is detected ; past column 30, it is skipped and recorded. set save_missing_desc=ON (or OFF, default=ON) ; << NEW since the Pre-Release >> ; I got tired of having to re-enter a file ; description for a file nuked by my upload ; checker. Now it's SAVED in whatever DIRx ; listing that iw "would have" gone to had ; it been a successful upload. I figure its ; a LOT easier to edit a DIRx file, then it ; is to re-enter a zillion descriptions. ; This also lets me track callers trying to ; upload, but continually failing. set show_flow=OFF (or ON, default=OFF) ; First time I saw the word FLOW flashing on my ; screen, I thought my modem was wigging out. ; It's not a bug but I didn't like it so, ; this SET takes care of it. set see_idle=100 (Security level, Default=100) ; Some sysops don't like callers seeing system ; idle time... some don't care. If you don't ; care, comment the line out, or set it to 0. ; Otherwise, set it to sysop level and then ; you'll be the only one seeing it. set upload_dups=100 (Security level, Default=100) ; Now I as the sysop can duplicate a file that ; already exists on the BBS. (like when trying ; to upload a newer version from remote). set strict_commands=ON (ON, OFF, default=ON) set show_errors=ON (ON, OFF, default=ON) set log_command_errors=ON (ON, OFF, default=ON) ; For more info on these three SETS, see the ; WHATS NEW info. ; ; NEW since 1.3 and 3.5.... ; If STRICT is ON, the system will keep ; track of bad commands and dump the caller ; if they make more than 10 during that call. ; Keeps callers from trying to break in to ; the system. set allow_disp=OFF (ON, OFF, Default=ON) ; Some sysops are a little leary of power of ; the $DISP- command. Set it OFF and the DISP ; command will NEVER be interpetted in ANYTHING ; Note: It will still work in PROTRNS and the ; new Sysop Macro Keys. __________________________________________________ Option: New @$ Vars Help Topic Index @SYSTIME2@... New since 1.3/3.5 12:34 PM style. @LUSER@...... Upper/Lower case Caller Name @HOTKEYS@.... Are they on for the caller? YES/NO @CHATPAGE@... Is he available for CHAT? YES/NO @EARNBYTES@.. Earned DL Bytes @LOGOFF@..... The NEAT one.. dumps caller. Stick this in ANY listing... DIRx, Bulletins, whatever, and when the caller hits it, he's outta there. I really like using the @ variables so... Look for a LOT more in the future. __________________________________________________ Option: UN-DO Help Topic Index Un-Doing the upgrade should be simple. Just copy ALL of your backups (you did make some didn't you?) on top of the new upgrades. Don't forget to remove any new SETS you might have added, or any new CNF variables that were added to the PROLON.CNF file. In a nutshell.... ----------------- 1. Copy all old .EXE and OVR files back. 2. Edit your BOARDx.BAT file and remove any of the new SET environment variables. 3. Edit your PROLON.CNF files and remove ALL of the NEW CNF variables. (See the NOTE!) NOTE: Leaving the new SETS will do NO HARM other than use up unnecessary environment space. The new CNF variables however WILL cause problems! When your old PROLON.EXE file sees the new variables it will IMMEDIATELY come to a halt, telling you it saw some "UnRecognized Keywords" in PROLON.CNF. (We kinda expected that.... right ??) __________________________________________________ Option: Running INSTALL See Also USING The same INSTALL.EXE program will work for ALL the the new ProDoor/ProLON files including the OVERLAY version of ProDOOR. The INSTALL program will detect what is available for installation, and then adjust its menus accordingly. To install the INSTALL program: ------------------------------- Create a SEPARATE directory and put ALL of the new files (including INSTALL.EXE) in that newly created directory. TWO Ways to RUN the INSTALL.EXE program: ---------------------------------------- 1. CD to where your existing ProDoor or ProLON files are, and run INSTALL. ie. CD\PCB C:\NEWSTUFF\INSTALL 2. or... first CD to the INSTALL directory and then type INSTALL. In BOTH cases, INSTALL will search your path for what it thinks are your existing files. You will be able to change what it found, to what it should NOTE: ----- You can run the INSTALL.EXE from ANY drive, or ANY directory. The only thing required is that ALL of the new ProDOOR and ProLON files MUST be in the same directory as INSTALL.EXE. When INSTALL runs, it will check to make sure all the neccessary files are there. If so, all is well. You'll be told if one or more files are missing. If the INSTALL_.HLP file is missing, INSTALL will still run, but you won't have access to ANY HELP/INFO data. __________________________________________________ Item: BACKUP First Related Topics: --------------- What the INSTALL will do.
